For years , our Technicians have used a modified DS8 tool to help us clear debris from element grooves prior to fitting new elements. The curved end fits well into the groove, and the pointed end is good for digging out melted pieces of elements or pottery mishaps. Be careful not to damage the lip of the groove, as this keeps the element in the groove once it's hot.
 
We also use a small paint brush or the crevice tool on your vacuum on a low setting to brush or suck away the debris.
